From mad scientists and giant robot pilots to government experiments gone wrong, sci-fi anime has some seriously powerful characters woven into its stories. While some physical constraints bind anime characters in other genres, sci-fi settings enable characters to use technology to bend reality to meet their win conditions. For the most powerful heroes and villains of sci-fi anime, the laws of physics are merely suggestions.
Some of sci-fi anime’s most powerful characters leveraged formidable intellect to achieve greatness. Others control fabulous technology that allows them to do what most can only dream. While there’s no one way for a sci-fi character to claim power, when they do, there’s hardly any limit to the heights they can reach.
Motoko Kusanagi Commands One of Most Elite Fighting Forces
While not capable of defying the laws of physics, Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell represents the peak of human, or rather, android potential. She’s the commander of Section 9 — an elite task force of highly trained operatives tasked with combating cyberterrorism in near-future Japan.
With cutting-edge technology, talented subordinates, and nigh-unlimited resources at her disposal, she’s one of the most powerful combatants in the world. Kusanai also possesses a fully cybernetic body, able to both withstand physical punishment and dish out digital damage. With the ability to hack into nearly any other cybernetically augmented person in her world, she’s a force to be reckoned with.
Vash the Stampede Embodies The Spirit of a Hurricane
On the distant planet of Gunsmoke, Vash the Stampede is one of the deadliest gunslingers around. Known as the Humanoid Typhoon, Vash, Trigun‘s iconic protagonist, is a wanted outlaw with a 60 billion double-dollar bounty on his head. He got this fearsome reputation from accidentally destroying an entire town, inadvertently using his alien physiology to unleash total destruction.
Aside from being deadly accurate and quick on the draw, Vash possesses the Angel Arm — a biological cannon that is formed out of his forearm with near-nuclear power. He’s a walking natural disaster; luckily, Vash is a peaceful sort of guy.
Rintaro Okabe Manipulates Time Itself in Steins;Gate
Rintaro Okabe is the only human being in the Steins;Gate universe to crack the code on time travel, and he did it entirely by accident. Using only a microwave and a cell phone, Rinatoro created a device that would allow him to shift through parallel timelines, allowing him to change the future on a whim.
While Rintaro isn’t physically powerful, his intellect alone makes him a target of SERN — a global organization working to stop independent scientists from developing time machines on their own. They even send a tactical team to try and assassinate him, viewing him as one of the most dangerous people on the planet.
Ragyō Kiryūin From Kill La Kill Almost Rules the Planet
The final boss of Kill La Kill, Ragyō Kiryūin is one of the most powerful people in her world. She’s the CEO of the Revocs Corporation, arguably the most influential company on the planet, responsible for a ludicrous 100% of all apparel sales globally. Aside from being one of the richest people on Earth, she’s also the chair of Honnōji Academy — less of a high school and more of a military superpower city-state.
Her trump card is her use of Life Fibers — strength-granting aliens stitched into clothes — which she uses to dominate and control anyone wearing Revocs clothing. Her very physiology is interwoven with Life Fibers, giving her superhuman speed, endurance, and city-leveling destructive power.
Shinji Ikari Holds the Fate of Humanity in His Hands
The adolescent protagonist of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji Ikari remains in close proximity to ultimate power throughout the series — finally possessing it for a moment at the climax. Hand-picked to pilot a giant kaiju-slaying mecha, he controls technology capable of withstanding the attacks of Angels — some of the most powerful, reality-breaking aliens in anime.
What tips Shinji into the upper echelons of power is his involvement with the Human Instrumentality Project, which aims to unify humanity into a single, undying intelligence. After his mecha merges with extraterrestrials of absurd power, Shinji becomes a near-divine being, able to decide whether humanity coalesces into a hivemind or remains individuals.
Akira’s Tetsuo Shima Evolves into a Lovecraftian Entity
After being exposed to an escaped government experiment, Akira‘s Tetsuo Shima rapidly begins to develop telekinetic powers that defy scientific understanding. As his body and mind mutate, he eventually transforms into a monstrous mass of flesh capable of rewriting the laws of the universe — before exiting it entirely.
During his ascension to a higher dimension, Tetsuo obliterates the entire city of Neo Tokyo in a blaze of destructive white light. With the city leveled, his friends try to remember him for the person he was, not the eldritch, physics-breaking intelligence he became.
Gurren Lagann’s Anti-Spiral Can Throw Entire Galaxies
A cosmic intelligence spanning countless light-years, the Anti-Spiral is the ultimate antagonist of Gurren Lagann. A being that inhibits the evolution of life across the universe, the Anti-Spiral has manipulated the fates of countless civilizations towards total ruin. Ageless and nearly infinite, there’s nowhere in existence safe from its influence.
In its climactic battle with series protagonist Simon, the Anti-Spiral is powerful enough to casually hurl entire galaxies at its opponent. While many of the most powerful sci-fi anime characters could take over the world, the Anti-Spiral nearly rules over all possible worlds.
Simon Can Throw a Galaxy Right Back at the Anti-Spiral
To defeat the all-powerful Anti-Spiral, Gurren Lagann‘s hero Simon had to become a force even mightier. After funneling Spiral Energy into himself, Simon can use its evolutionary powers to achieve near limitless potential. Infusing his mecha with Spiral Energy, Simon transforms it into Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a giant robot so ludicrously big that it dwarfs galaxies.
Because Spiral Energy becomes stronger the more the being using it evolves, there’s no ceiling to the amount of power that its user can obtain. Through sheer force of will, Simon was able to defeat a cosmic entity of unparalleled power — briefly becoming the strongest being in the Gurren Lagann multiverse.
Madoka Transcends Physics to Become a New Fundamental Force
While Madoka spends most of Puella Magi Madoka Magica as a regular human being, she’s consistently told by the alien Kyubey that she has the potential to become one of the most powerful magical girls in all existence. At the end of the story, she achieves that potential. Using the power of a wish, Madoka transforms into the Law of Cycles, a cosmic being capable of meeting magical girls across all timelines, stopping them before they irrevocably turn into witches.
The Law of Cycles fundamentally eliminates witches from the universe, ending the existence of witches in the past, present and future. Rather than turn into witches, magical girls are now able to peacefully pass on from life after their power is used up. Madoka is no longer a human being in this form, but rather a benevolent god of life and death that transcends space and time.
Dragon Ball’s Zeno Can Delete The Multiverse on a Whim
While many of the characters in the Dragon Ball franchise reach absurd levels of power, none can hold a candle to the Omni-King Zeno. Don’t be fooled by his adorable appearance; this childlike alien is a being of omnipotent power. He’s the ultimate ruler of the multiverse and can destroy anything with nothing but the force of his will. People, planets, stars, galaxies, universes, Zeno could end reality itself if he felt like it.
According to the angel Whis, Zeno has used this destructive power before. There were once 18 universes in the cosmology of Dragon Ball Super, but Zeno casually eliminated 6 of them when he was in a bad mood. Anime characters don’t get more powerful (or more terrifying) than that.
